FAMILY OWNED AND RUN
Our reviews say a lot about the kind of trip you're going to have when you come away on a tour with us.
We are a small family run business with a small number of trusted staff that we take away each year to help create a holiday of a lifetime for our guests. We don't employ hundreds of people that we don't know to be the face of our company. We don't run 10 tours at a time in 10 countries across the world all year round. We take approx 20 people at a time to selected regions across Europe and Australia and we oversee every element of your trip. All you need to bring is your lunch money and some coin for drinks at dinner. This is part of the reason why our tours cost less. Because we don't have the massive overheads many of the bigger companies do. It's just us and a few trusted family members and friends making sure you get the ultimate cyling experience of a lifetime.
Kerry Stubbs found a passion for cycling at an early age, riding his bike to school and around the streets of his home town growing up. Kerry's skills in event management go back to the mid eighties, first competing in and then setting up a business running cycling and triathlon events across Australia. Kerry also became involved in the sports travel industry, taking teams and groups to all corners of the globe for world championship events and to Kona. Since launching Velo Tours in 2010, Kerry now spends his time in both Europe and Australia with his wife Kim, putting together new tours for passionate cylists wanting to holiday in amazing places with their bikes.
Kim has been project managing within the sports industry since 2006 and coordinating tours both overseas and locally in Australia since launching Velo Tours with her husband Kerry in 2010. Her sporting background and management roles in operations, logistics and hospitality have given her the skill sets required to put together and host major tours globally with no small detail overlooked. This dynamic husband and wife team provides guests with a true "family road trip" type experience that has people coming back again and again. Kim is also our on course photographer, her snap shots of lifetime memories feature on the website and daily Facebook updates and are then sent to our groups to keep after each tour.
Henk Vogels has been Ambassador for Velo Tours since 2016. Having been involved in cycling for most of his life and turning pro at the age of 21, Henk brings an invaluable presence to each of our tours, both with his knowledge of cycling on a Grand Tour level and his hilarious sense of humour and approachable, down to earth personality. As a professional cyclist, Henk competed in 2 Tours of France, 2 Tours of Italy and 2 Tours of Spain. Henk also competed in eight World Championships, claimed podium finishes in some of the Spring Classics and a top ten finish in the gruelling Paris Roubiaix. Henk now makes regular appearances on SBS Cycling during the Tour de France as an analyst and commentator.
Tim Stubbs has been a supervisor in one of the largest gold mines in WA for 25 years and is a passionate cyclist in his spare time. Tim takes a sabbatical from work each year since to help as a domestique on our tours in both Europe and in Bright. Tim's strengths both on the bike and behind the wheel of a bus, truck or van are invaluable on tour and when the two Stubbs boys are together on a bike, each day is a competition with never a dull moment while these two are around! Tim's local knowledge of the French Alpes and the Pyrenees regions is extensive and he's always available to our guests for a chin wag over a cup of tea!
Gordie is another member of the Stubbs family, married to Tim for 30 odd years and has been a valued member of the Velo Tours crew for just over 12 months, having looked after some groups in the Pyrenees, the Alpes and our Tour de France in 2018. Gordie has a warm and outgoing personality that inevitably has everyone falling in love with her within the first few hours of arrival and her career in people management back home in Perth, Western Australia means she has the skills to make sure your holiday will be all that you imagine it to be and more.
Blair is a passionate young cyclist from Tasmania who is studying Physiotherapy at univeristy full time and also races with the Van Diemen's Development Team. Blair is our young gun domestique who is always first to the top of the climbs to help set up our feed stations and bag drop and then he rides down to offer support to everyone coming up the mountains behind him. Blair's knowledge of the sport of cycling overall and skills as a bike mechanic makes his place on the team invaluable. Blair looks forward to his annual trip to France as a support crew member on our tours not because of the amazing opportunity but because it doubles as a "hills" session in his training program!
Scotty Russell has known Kerry for over 35 years, both racing and riding socially together while living in Tasmania. Scotty still races mountain bikes and rides regularly in criteriums and gran fondos when his work as an accountant for the local council allows. Scotty's riding ability, bike skills and knowledge of bikes in general means he can make any repair out on the road whilst also looking after riders in the group. Scott and his wife Susie have both cycled extensively across France, Spain and Italy.
Susie is a former Australian age group champion in the sport of triathlon and a long time nemesis of Kerry's on the course after beating him once by 1 second in a local race, a fact that we take every opportunity to remind him of whenever Susie and Scotty come on tour with us! When not operating in a key role within one of the leading financial institutions back home, Susie is a natural athlete who has cycled extensively across Europe and both rides as a guide and domestique with Velo Tours or drives the support vehicles when required. Susie has a quick sense of humour and is an asset to the Velo Tours team for her very approachable personality and calming influence on the group.
An ex rower, Greg took up cycling after hanging up the oars back in his thirties. Greg established the local riding group ‘The Middle Of The Night’ bunch on the North West coast of Tasmania and has raced in the Tasmanian Road Racing calendar for many years as well as numerous Gran Fondos. Greg has cycled extensively in France, Italy and Spain and has now retired from racing to enjoy riding loctally at home when not acting as a guide and domestique on our Grande Italia tour rach year. Greg is a great member of the Velo Tours team for his knowledge of bikes and cycling in general as well as his hilarious antics at dinner each night.
Peter was a career police officer of 34 years in Victoria and towards the end of his illustrious career, lectured law and policy to new recruits at the academy. Pete is recently retired and a passionate cyclist with a weekend getaway in Corryong where he racks up annual rides in excess of around 20,000km. Pete has ridden in Italy, Spain, France and Crete and regularly races in the Tour of Bright, Tour of Mansfield and the Grafton-Inverell Classic and is a calming influence and level head on our Grande Italia tours.
Dave is a former Hawaiian Ironman finisher and winner of the prestigious Cunningham Classic in Queensland. He's raced the Grafton Inverell Classic 4 times and rode 3 Peaks in under 8.5 hrs. Dave races locally and rides with the GTR and Giro Q boys on the Gold Coast when he's not working on his day job as Operations Manager for SEQ Water. Dave has three children, including a teenage son and twin girls under the age of 3 (who we are proud godparents to). He is a passionate cyclist and an all round nice guy who loves nothing better than coffee rides and training for his next big challenge on the bike.
Ben is another cycling member of the Stubbs family who helps out on the tours as a super domestique. Ben is usually wired for sound with his wireless speaker in the back of his jersey, bringing a lot of fun and personality to the group. Ben is a passionate roadbike and mountainbike rider when not attending his day job as an electritian. Ben has completed 3 Ironmans in his short career and spends many weekends at Derby in Tasmania often with his wife Asha for the amazing mountain biking available there. Ben and Asha have travelled extensively overseas so he brings a depth of travel and cultural knowldege to our tours and he's always available for a chat about almost anything related to cycling or the Geelong FC.
Asha, Ben's wife and Kerry's daughter is a teacher by day and support van driver, coordinator and house manager when on tour during the European summer. Asha's career as a Year 11 and 12 teacher brings great organisational skills to our team as well as her extensive experience working in the sporting industry on events including the Devonport Triathlon, the Devonport Half Ironman and the Mark Webber Challenge. Asha and Ben have both travelled the world extensively over the last 5 years so they have a depth of knowledge with international travel. Both Asha and Ben have taken a sabbatical from guiding and touring in 2018 to welcome their first child. Congratulations guys!
